February 11 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science; On this day, I reflect on my decision to pursue a career in the biotechnology field. As a woman, I was not just entering a field, I was joining a revolution, one that transcends all scientific boundaries. My lifelong desire, which blends my curiosity about life’s intricacies coupled with the opportunity to make impactful, tangible contributions to improve the health and well-being of humankind was a catalyst.
As a quality professional in the biotechnology arena, I have had the gratification to contribute, witness, and work with the best global scientific minds to develop cutting-edge technologies over the years. These include regenerative engineering which involves the manipulation of amniotic membrane grafts to prepare corneal bandages to enhance visual acuity, propagation of monoclonal antibodies for medicinal use, manufacture of radioimmunoconjugates as a new class of cancer therapeutics to name a few.
To young ladies considering biotechnology, this field is not just a career; it is a chance to be at the forefront of transformative research and solutions. In this field one must always ask questions, challenge theories, and embrace the unknown. The biotechnology industry needs your brilliant mind and kind heart. The potential to impact all socio-economic norms, embark on new scientific frontiers, and improve the quality of life is endless.
